Working Livery

Working Livery at Rycroft School of Equitation

Your horse doesn't have to cost as much as you think!

Working livery is a lower cost traditional livery service that suits many busy people with their own horse or pony.

What is working livery?
Owning a horse or pony can be more affordable than you think on ‘working livery’. This is a bit like time share for horses. It means that your horse is under professional care 24/7 under the watchful and caring eye of qualified instructors. A horse will normally work 10-12 hours a week, and you will be able to ride up to 4 hours a week in lessons and hacking out in the forest. The horse then also work for the riding stables. This way the horse earns part of its keep, is kept fit, healthy and exercised and the cost to you is reduced.

What does my working livery include?
The set monthly fee of £316.33 (£73 per week) for ponies and £385.67 (£89 per week) for horses includes absolutely everything to do with the day to day care of your horse or pony, including: shoeing/teeth/clipping/minor medication/worming/attending vet or farrier/minor care flu & tetanus vaccinations/feed & bedding.

What our clients say about Working Livery:
“I have my horse Sebastian on working livery at Rycroft. It’s really good for me because I always know he is being well looked after. When I turn up to ride he is ready to go and I don’t have to do a lot of hard work, but if I wanted to enjoy grooming him I could. I can go away on holiday without having to worry about making special arrangements. The yard is really friendly. Its fun getting to know the other owners and riding out with them, then getting back for coffee and chat in warm and relaxed surroundings.” - Gaye Pottinger

"Our family pony, Esme, is on working livery at Rycroft. Rycroft has a friendly atmosphere where help is always on hand. The horses are well cared for and there is a big feeling that they are all part of the family . The cost are fantastic, especially including vaccinations, the farrier and worming. - Helen McVey

Many clients are keen to obtain a British Horse Society (BHS) professional qualification. This is particularly relevant for:

Students - looking for a future career working with horses

Amateur riders - who believe (rightly in our opinion) that they will derive greater enjoyment from their hobby when they are proficient in all aspects of riding and horse care.

Horse owners - whether they have full responsibility for upkeep of their horses or have placed them in livery.

BHS Courses
Rycroft runs a range of training courses aimed at obtaining BHS Stages I/II/III qualifications and passing the BHS Preliminary Teaching Test (PTT). Courses vary in duration from 1-24 weeks. For further details contact our office on 0118 9732761.

Working Student Scheme

Quality training for the individual

The Working Student Scheme/Apprenticeship enables students to combine training with work experience.

Training is given towards British Horse Society Examinations, NVQs and Preliminary Teaching Test. It consists of three sessions of riding and three sessions of stable management per week, plus practical stable management.

All students are individually and personally monitored by our Chief Instructor, When students are ready they will be entered for the British Horse Society examination, which may be taken at Rycroft throughout the year. Examination fees are paid by Rycroft after an initial period of four months training.

Courses normally last for one to one-and-a-half years. Having successfully completed training to BHS Assistant Instructor level, students may continue at Rycroft as a member of staff, training to BHS Stage IV, or they may wish to move on - perhaps training in a different branch of horses, thus widening their experience.

For more information please call us on 0118 973 2761 or Email us at rycroft.riding@btopenworld.com so we can discuss your personal requirements in more detail.

Find Us

General

Eversley is on the Hampshire/Berkshire border, some 6 miles from the M3 and 10 miles from the M4. It is best approached along the A327 road which runs between Reading and Aldershot.

Coming from the West & M4

As you enter Eversley Street, you will cross the River Blackwater by the Tally Ho pub. Continue through the village and, just past the White Hart pub (on your left), turn right into Warbrook Lane. After a quarter of a mile, fork right into Lower Common and continue for three quarters of a mile towards the New Mill. Rycroft is on your right.

Do not attempt to reach us via New Mill Road, Finchampstead. This route involves a deep ford which is unsuitable for cars.

Coming from the East & M3

Entering Eversley on the A327, you will see Warbrook House on your left. Just beyond the 30mph sign, turn left into Warbrook Lane. After a quarter of a mile, fork right into Lower Common and continue towards New Mill. Rycroft is on your right.

Coming from Basingstoke

Follow the A33 northwards towards Reading. At Heckfield, turn right towards Bramshill. Go straight on past the sign to the Police College for about half a mile. Turn left at St. Neot's Road and then left again into Lower Common which will take you to Rycroft.

From novice to more advanced riders - who are eventing or competing BSJA - all levels can benefit from John's teaching. John is a British Eventing accredited trainer, who has jumped on Nations Cup teams and competed at Badminton. John provides training for all levels.

John's teaching career began in the Household Cavalry, where he became the youngest soldier to qualify as a Military Riding Instructor. After his Army career, he worked as Rough Rider for HM The Queen at the Royal Mews Windsor Castle, backing and schooling riding horses.

One of the few people to have been both a prize-winner at Badminton and an International show jumper, John is a British Eventing accredited trainer and a UK Sport coach and taught for the BSJA for over twenty years. He has jumped on the Nations Cup team and been in the ribbons at the Horse of the Year Show, Hickstead and the Royal Windsor Horse Show. John's expertise and wealth of experience have helped everyone from Pony Clubbers to top eventers achieve their goals. Lucinda Green credits him with getting her great horse 'Wide Awake' to jump his first clear round at a three day event, at Boekelo. The pair went on to win Badminton!

John's teaching ethos is “keep it simple”. He says: “I always try to be constructive and to look for the positives. It's very easy to point out the negatives - but a successful outcome comes through focusing on the positives.” It's this approach that has seen many of John's pupils credit him with boosting their confidence. His popular clinics typically start with grid work and, once horse and rider are going correctly, progress to jumping courses.
